Two of the most famous carpets from are Khan Mohammadi and Afghan Aqcha. Afghan Khan Mohammadi is a variant of Khal Mohammadi's name, who designed and uniquely coloured these rugs. He was an Ersari Turkman who created new ideas while living in Afghanistan. These rugs and carpets are handmade by the Turkmans in villages around Kunduz in northern Afghanistan.
The rich red of these rugs is created from boiling the madder plant's root, which grows wild in that part of the world. They are finely knotted using wool from the who graze the mountainous terrain. The colour and design make them very practical. Some occurring motifs are guls (elephant's foot pattern) and octagonal, often curvilinear flowers in dark blue, ochre and beiges.
