Tropea Rossa Tonda is a highly prized red onion from Calabria and is considered the best red onion in Italy. This famous onion is the centrepiece of the Onion Festival of Tropea in July and was featured on the programme Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy in October 2022.
The bulb of Tropea Rossa Tonda is medium or large-sized, round and slightly crushed at the end. The outer layer is a bright red colour while the inner flesh is white with a sweet and juicy taste. If picked when young, it is completely white. To avoid damage, it must be kept in a sunny and dry environment, but not arid. The ideal sowing period is from August to November, and the harvest can be done from April to June.
This onion is extremely tender and sweet and changes from white to red as it matures. It is used for salads, pastas, and sauces and has a very sweet taste. It stores well in a cool and shady room.
